Located in the heart of Westlake Village, Carden Elementary school adheres to the highest standards of the Carden System.

Mae Carden founded the Carden Method for learning. Over a half century ago, she developed a method of teaching that enabled children to understand concepts and material in a new way. She was convinced that the only way to teach reading was with the phonetic approach. To phonics, she added critical thinking and analysis. From the 1930's through the 1940's she wrote her textbooks for the elementary curriculum. She opened Miss Carden's School for Young Children in 1934 in New York City. In 1949 she closed it to be able to respond to the many requests from public and private schools for her method. 

Carden Conejo School, formally known as the Carden Junior School of Thousand Oaks, was founded in 1971 by Mary Carpenter and Thelma Sitton, who together founded Viewpoint School in Calabasas. In 1981, Nancy Carsten and Georgan Schmitz acquired Carden Conejo School. In the spring of 2005, Holly and Bob Fleming purchased the school from Mrs. Carsten and Mrs. Schmitz. For the nine previous years, Mrs. Fleming served as a teacher at the school.
